Via Dave’s Fiction Warehouse, CNN reports:
"Dumbledore is gay," the author [JKR] responded to gasps and applause.
She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore’s feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down." "
Dave is unimpressed by this revelation, and opines that if anyone was gay in the Harry Potter books, he would select Snape. I disagree — Snape has a love, and it is a woman. I don’t see any other person that could be an object of his affection in that way. Draco Malfoy, maybe — he is certainly a very conflicted character compared with most, and his being gay would be one explanation for his ambivalence in most of the books in which he features, particularly the last two.
I’ve checked out JKR’s official site (always a good idea when anything ascribed to her is reported) and there is nothing there (other than a confirmation that she is indeed currently touring the USA), so one has to take CNN’s word for it. For Dave, however, JKR is not doing the right thing: "Show, don’t tell. Maybe D. could have had a collection of Barbara Streisand records or something. By just telling, Rowling is subtly insulting her readers."
